Ke Kaukahi: Kauhale Huaka'i
Artist Statement
The Outrigger: Journey Home represents my spiritual journey home to Hawai'i . Outrigger canoes were a significant vessel of old Hawai'i. Canoe building was a community effort with religious ceremonies observed at various stages of completion.
The sculpture symbolizes and honors my cultural heritage and captures the spirit of "Ohana" (family). My rendition of the Hoe wa'a (canoe paddlers), is adapted from ancient Hawaiian petroglyphs to symbolize the strength and spirit of the paddlers. Hoe wa'a was a high ranking position chosen by the Ali'i (Chief). My representation of a traditional wood carved outrigger was conceived from memory and published works.
